About the Board Year

WHAT KIND OF BOARD YEAR IS THIS?

This is a full-time board year in which you will be one of four student board members of Amsterdam Student Investment Fund BV.

Yearly, four students form the student board of ASIF. In the future, for improved continuity, 50% of the board will switch in September and 50% in February. Because we’re currently in our first year though, this September four students will start simultaneously.

Besides the student board, there are three senior board members. These are seasoned entrepreneurs or investors, and will be doing this part-time. They combine coaching and supervising the student board members. Investment decisions are made by the full board (students + seniors). However, since we want to offer real responsibility, the students will always have a majority.

I’M VERY INTERESTED, BUT CAN’T AFFORD A FULL-TIME YEAR – SHOULD I STILL APPLY?

In general, the board year is full-time. However, if you, say, still need to do one or two courses next to it, then that’s not necessarily impossible! With some hard work, it may very well be doable. If you’re not sure, just reach out to us and we’ll discuss!

Most important is that you regard ASIF your main priority from September onward, for 12 months. The reason is that you will be literally running your own company – if you don’t move, nothing will. And investment is all about opportunity. Examples of things that are definitely not doable next to an ASIF board year are full-time studying or doing a full-time internship for multiple months.

WILL THIS COST ME ANYTHING? OR CAN I EARN SOMETHING?

You will get a monthly reimbursement, or ‘bestuursbeurs’. We still have to decide on the exact amount, but expect something in the €300 – €400 ballpark.

Apart from that, it won’t cost you anything, and you won’t earn anything (such as shares, or part of the profit). The only parties that will take profit are our shareholders, and they are also the only ones involved for whom costs will be incurred. Both students and senior board members do this for the experience, the fun and the network!

WHAT WILL THE FOUR BOARD ROLES BE?

These roles are not set in stone – experience will teach what works best in practice – but right now we’re thinking about the following:

  • President
  • Director of Finance
  • Director of Dealflow
  • Director of Network

Dealflow is the process of attracting enough startups and having them proceed through the investment process. Assessing startups is something every board member will do, but the Director of Dealflow will be primarily responsible.

The Director of Network keeps in touch with the numerous parties within the ASIF Network. He or she makes sure to keep an overview of what’s happening in the ecosystem, what kind of added values parties can have to ASIF (and the other way around), and connects mutual interests whenever possible.

WHAT WILL MY ACTIVITIES LOOK LIKE?

As a board member, you work full-time as a fund manager. You’ll be doing the daily management of the company, which amounts to three broad categories of tasks:

  • ‘actual investment’ tasks;
  • ‘running a company’ tasks;
  • ‘entrepreneurship in general’ tasks.

Obviously, the ‘actual investment tasks’ are your core business. Deal sourcing, assessing business plans, negotiating on investment terms, keeping track of the portfolio. However, since you’re literally running a company, all sorts of other tasks will also come your way – attracting additional capital, hiring people, working on the marketing strategy, discussing with shareholders, you name it.

But ASIF is about more than just investing. More generally, your goal is to be the center of student entrepreneurship. Ideally, if a student considers entrepreneurship, getting in touch with ASIF should be the first thing he / she thinks about. That’s why you’ll also be working on organizing events, embedding ASIF in study curricula, creating communities. For things like these, you will be often collaborating with other parties in the startup ecosystem.

Ultimately, those general tasks serve a strategic goal. Being a central player in the ecosystem will enable you to be a better investor, as you will attract more deals and have a broader network to leverage.

And of course: it’s your year! All four of you are directors of the company, so you can decide yourselves which projects and tasks to take on, in order to compose the most awesome board year on the planet.
